Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we get most often about Smart Factory, energy monitoring and working with VDS. Is your question not listed? Get in touch.

What exactly is VDS Smart Factory?

A platform that brings data from machines, sensors, ERP and MES together in a single dashboard. You get real-time insight into OEE, downtime, energy and quality, plus AI signals that predict patterns, peaks and deviations.

Does VDS work with our existing machines and systems?

Yes. VDS connects to anything that gives off a digital signal: OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, digital and analogue I/O, API links and ERP, MES or SCADA systems. We supply our own IoT hardware for machines that are not yet digitally unlocked.

How long does an implementation take?

A basic implementation is usually up and running within 4 to 8 weeks. We start with one line or installation, deliver value, and build out from there. No multi-year IT programme.

What does VDS Smart Factory cost?

The investment depends on the number of machines, the type of sensors and the dashboards you want. We work with a combination of a one-off set-up and a monthly subscription. During the Quick Scan we cost out a set-up that fits your situation.

Is the Quick Scan really free?

Yes. We spend half a day on site, map out your production environment and deliver a report with the biggest improvement opportunities within one week. With no obligation to continue.

Who owns our data?

The data remains entirely your property. We process it in your own environment (Azure or on-premise). VDS has no commercial interest in your data.

Do I need to involve my IT department?

For the connection to your network and systems, yes, but we take care of the heavy lifting. No long-running IT project, but a short technical intake on your side.

What is the difference between Smart Factory and Energy monitoring?

Smart Factory is the broad platform for production performance, OEE and downtime. Energy monitoring focuses specifically on energy consumption per installation, per machine and per moment. Both services use the same foundation and can be taken separately or combined.

Do you also help with energy reporting and obligations?

Yes. Most manufacturers we work with have to deal with the energy saving obligation and the EED audit obligation in the Netherlands: you have to substantiate your consumption and demonstrate the measures you have taken to save energy. Our measurement data and analyses provide that substantiation, instead of Excel and assumptions. If you fall indirectly under CSRD through large customers in your chain, the same data provides the basis for that as well. We do not draw up reports or policy documents ourselves; we supply the data and the insight, you draw the conclusions.

Do you only work for the manufacturing industry?

Our focus is on production and process environments: food, chemicals, feed, metal and related sectors. For logistics or real estate we work on request, but that is not our primary market.
